CHASEN MAKING DEMONSTRATION

by THE 20th generation chasen master: TANIMURA TANGO

Hello everyone!

We are absolutely ecstatic to share with you the news that we will be welcoming the one and only 20th generation chasen master Tanimura Tango to Cha-ology on Monday 8th December!!!

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to welcome Tango sensei to our small teahouse, all across the oceans, here in Manchester. We are deeply honoured to be able to hold a live chasen making demonstration during his visit, so our guests can witness and be mesmerised by the different techniques and stages he uses to transform a single piece of bamboo into a functional work of art.

This will be ticketed event and seats are very limited. Ticket enquiries must be made by email to info@cha-ology.com. We will be opening the ticket presale strictly to guests who have purchased a chasen from us before November 5th 2025. If there is further availability, tickets will then be prioritised for our regular guests and then those who have visited us before.

Date: Monday 8th December 2025

Time: 10:00-11:30 / 13:30-15:00

Price: £75pp

Number of guests per timeslot: 15+

Procedure: Teas and snacks will be served during the event. We expect the demonstration to take around 40 minutes. Brief and discrete photograph taking will be allowed during the demonstration, and afterwards there will also be a short Q&A session, followed by a brief photo opportunity with Tango sensei. Each guest will take home a signed postcard.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, we will also be releasing a limited number of special tea scoops available at a discounted price of £25 only for event attending guests - shimi gomadake and susudake mizuyasaji. These are extremely rare and limited in availability, so there will be a maximum limit of one scoop per person.

Shimi is the name given to the patterns caused by excess moisture from rain or elsewhere while the bamboo is growing, and results a unique darker brown colouration pattern somewhat similar to kurodake (black bamboo) or susudake (old smoky bamboo), but distinctly different. We have shimidake chashaku and gomadake chashaku in the teahouse, but this unique combination is something we have never seen before and is extremely interesting!

Susudake is bamboo that is between 100-150 years old that used to be above the hearth or stove in extremely old buildings. The heat and smoke from over a century of daily cooking gives a rich deep brown colour to the bamboo. True susudake is rare and finite, as new buildings are not built this way anymore. Tango sensei himself said he is probably the only person who has made susudake mizuyasaji - it’s also something we’ve never seen before!

The revenue from ticket sales will be used for Tango sensei’s travel costs to and from London as well as his accommodation.

We cannot wait to share this extremely special day with you! If you are interested in attending, please email us with your preferred time, number of guests, and choice of special tea scoop if desired.

Remarks:

Payment is taken in advance. Once the seats are confirmed we will be sending the link for payment. If you request to cancel, refunds will only be given if the space(s) are filled. Thank you for understanding!
