Bamboo matcha whisk handmade by Tanimura Tango (20th generation chasen master). We make yearly visits to his house and studio. This is a rare unmon bamboo, also called purple crested bamboo. Each one is handcrafted therefore will be slightly different.

We recommend to purchase kusenaoshi (chasen holder) to keep the shape of the chasen after cleaning, as while drying the chasen tines will naturally close together and whisking will become more and more difficult.

Tango sensei’s chasen are 100% hand made, although an electric saw is used to cut the bamboo down to size (traditionally a hand saw was used!). Because of this, some fragmentation or splintering of the bamboo skin may be present on the bottom of the handle of the whisk. It is purely a cosmetic blemish and does not affect the use of the chasen in any way. If you have any concerns about this please get in touch by email.
