Susudake, refers to smokey bamboo, is bamboo that is over 100 years old (usually between 100 to 200 years old), being exposed to smoke and heat on the ceiling and roof above the irori (sunken hearth in traditional Japanese houses). There are fewer and fewer of these houses hence susudake therefore chasen and chashaku made from this type of bamboo is rare.

Each one is unique and different and we hope you appreciate it. Different colours happen naturally in different parts of the bamboo over the years, which brings the uniqueness of each individual chashaku. You can send us an email info@cha-ology.com for photos of current stock.
