Bamboo matcha whisk handmade by Tanimura Tango (20th generation chasen master). We make yearly visits to his house and studio. This black bamboo is also called kurotake. Each one is handcrafted therefore will be slightly different.

Background story of this special chasen:

Since day one, he has been an important mentor to us. Since day one of the teahouse to now, we have remained committed to using chasen only from Tango sensei, along with other bambooware - chashaku, hishaku, futaoki and hanaire. Never in the 10 years have we sought a cheap alternative. I'm so proud to say in the 10 years, every bowl of matcha we serve, every chasen we sold, has always been from Ikomashi, Nara prefecture.

I still vividly remember my first meeting with Tango sensei. He said, "初心者こそ、本物を" (Beginners should start with the real thing). He believes that exposure to true quality from the start leads to a lasting appreciation for tea preparation. His words have guided our teahouse’s philosophy for a decade. In 2025 December, it was our absolute honour to host him in our teahouse for two demonstration sessions with our regulars. It also gave us an opportunity to show him the impact of his mentorship.

As we celebrate our 10 year milestone in July, we hope to have made a small impact on your own tea journey by encouraging quality and craft over convenience. We hope you can choose stories behind the making, over instagrammable photos.

To celebrate our 10 year anniversary anniversary, we are releasing 12 special kurotake (black bamboo) chasen featuring UK flag colors. Each one comes in a special wooden box signed by Tango sensei and includes a personal message from him "初心者こそ、本物を". We hope these pieces find owners who will cherish them for years to come.
